Regardless of the means of travel, our presence inevitably leaves an impact on the environment and the communities we visit. As conscientious travelers, we are deeply concerned about the footprint we leave behind. Naturally, we aspire to continue exploring the world while minimizing any negative consequences.

Numerous studies, including the most recent Sustainable Travel report by Booking.com, reveal that a significant majority of travelers actively seek out more sustainable travel options. This is undoubtedly a positive development. However, it must be acknowledged that the travel industry has yet to make this pursuit straightforward and accessible for travelers.

Let’s start at the beginning. What exactly is sustainable travel?

Well, to put it simply, there's no such thing as travel without an impact. That being said, sustainability is often narrowly associated with environmental concerns. As travelers, it's valuable to broaden our understanding of sustainable travel and view it in a more comprehensive light. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines sustainable tourism based on three equally important pillars: environmental sustainability, socio-cultural sustainability, and local economic sustainability.

In essence, sustainable travel, also referred to as responsible travel or eco-tourism, represents a style of exploration aimed at minimizing adverse effects on both the environment and local communities. This involves taking measures to reduce one's carbon footprint, actively supporting local businesses and communities, and preserving the richness of cultural heritage.

The encouraging news is that there are numerous ways to adopt more sustainable travel practices. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach, allowing you to chart your own course toward a more responsible travel experience.

When factoring sustainability into your trip planning, you can consider several key factors:

Transportation

One of the leading contributors to our carbon emissions during travel is our mode of transportation. To minimize your carbon footprint, you could consider using public transportation, walking, or cycling rather than relying on personal vehicles or taxis. When air travel is necessary, you can also take steps to offset your carbon emissions. Numerous airlines incorporate carbon offset programs as part of their booking process, making it easier for travelers to participate. Additionally, choosing biofuels as your aviation fuel option is another way to reduce your carbon emissions and demonstrate your commitment to environmentally responsible travel practices.

Accommodation

Look for eco-friendly accommodations that use renewable energy sources, recycle waste, and reduce water usage. You can also support local communities by choosing to stay in locally-owned accommodations, such as guesthouses or bed and breakfasts.

Activities

Opting for local experiences when planning activities is a natural choice; we seek out local landmarks, indigenous architecture, or nearby trails. However, have you ever thought about the people behind these experiences? It's worthwhile to seek out providers who prioritize sustainability and cultural awareness. For instance, you might choose to participate in a cooking class that uses locally-sourced ingredients or take a hiking tour that actively supports conservation initiatives. If you're ever unsure, don't hesitate to ask for information and insights to ensure your choices align with these values.

Food

One of the best translators of culture is food. When choosing local, you support local traditions. When you choose organic food, opt for vegetarian options, or eat seasonal food options you are supporting a stronger biodiversity. Additionally, try choosing places that are actively working on reducing food waste through food collection or providing to-go bags. Following these tips will help reduce your impact.

Sustainability is a collective journey, and sharing it is a vital sustainable choice. When you recognize and promote sustainability initiatives at hotels and restaurants you visit, you facilitate communication and make it simpler for future travelers to discover them.
